The Bloody Sunday Trust and the Pat Finucane Centre have announced that they will hold a fundraising appeal for the Palestinian Medical Relief Society in the lead up to Christmas. Last year’s Christmas appeal raised £3,607, which went toward a total of £20,951 donated by the Bloody Sunday Trust to Palestinian causes.

Speaking as the appeal is launched the Chairperson of the Bloody Sunday Trust, Mr Tony Doherty, explained that it is intended to give the people of Derry and further afield an opportunity to give some practical support to the people of Palestine, Mr Doherty said,

“The Bloody Sunday Trust has a long tradition of partnership and solidarity with the Palestinian people and Palestinian organisations. At this terrible time for the people of Gaza we wanted to give the people of Derry the chance to provide some practical support to our brothers and sisters under such terrible onslaught from Israel.

“The daily images coming from Gaza are heartrending and the campaign of slaughter, war crimes and genocide has motivated justice loving people across the globe to demand an immediate ceasefire. Derry, in light of our own history and our own experiences, has been to the forefront of this campaign. This appeal is part of that process.

“As we approach Christmas many people will be buying presents and treats for their loved ones. With the ongoing genocide in Gaza, we are asking people to consider making a donation to this appeal, either at the Museum of Free Derry or online at:

“We have been overwhelmed, but not surprised, by the support the people of Derry have demonstrated for the people of Gaza during this current Israeli attack on the Palestinian people. This appeal is another way for them to do that.”

As part of the appeal the Museum of Free Derry is selling a range of items, including a Palestinian-themed Christmas card, and all monies raised from these sales will go towards the appeal.

The appeal will close on 31st December, and all monies raised by then will go to the Palestinian Medical Relief Society
