On the day of the burials, the British embassy in Dublin was burned to the ground. Throughout the south and in nationalist areas of the north, schools and workplaces closed in support of the families. The southern government designated the general stoppage
“a national day of mourning.”
Derry Coroner Hubert O’Neill later declared the killings
“sheer unadulterated murder”.
The hundreds of civilian eyewitnesses agreed.
