Granny Squares for Gaza Quilt Hosted in Derry
Craftivism for Palestine will team up with The Bloody Sunday Trust to bring their Granny
Squares for Gaza quilt to Derry on 29 July. The quilt will be laid out on the banking
overlooking the Bogside during that afternoon 1pm – 3pm weather permitting.
The quilt now comprises of 2300 squares, each representing 10 children murdered by
Israel in Gaza, and has grown to this size as the child death toll in the genocide continues
to rise.
Anna Doyle from Craftivism for Palestine, said:
“This project is one of remembrance, resistance and rage, where we have taken the
energy of frustration to create something, and encourage those without the ability to
protest to gather in solidarity through craft. When we started we were planning on 1300
squares, but as the numbers sadly grew so did our quilt. We contacted every library on
the island and asked them to ask their craft groups to participate. We got lots of groups
forming just to help with this. TDs were invited to contribute as did football clubs and so
many more.”
Tony Doherty, Chair of the Bloody Sunday Trust, said:
“This quilt is an ideal way to help remember the thousands of children murdered in Gaza.
To use such a gentle craft, one with such connections to childhood for many of us, to
mark the extreme violence of the genocide in Gaza, shows us the contrast in this world
between those who support and enable this genocide and those good people who will
always oppose it. We are honoured to help host this in Derry.”
