The Cuban flag was raised at Free Derry Corner to mark the 70th anniversary of the attack on Moncado Barracks in Cuba, the symbolic start of the Cuban revolution. Speaker Daisy Mules gave a short oration to assembled supporters, calling for an end to the US blockade of Cuba.
On 26 July 1953, Fidel Castro led the attack in Santiago de Cuba, in an attempt to overthrow the Batista dictatorship. It failed, but the core group of surviving revolutionaries soon became the leaders of the Cuban Revolution. It is this day, the ‘National Rebellion Day’ as named by Cubans, above all others, that represents the success of Cuba’s fight for self-determination.’
